The Director, Strategic Communications will lead a broad range of communications initiatives for one of our growing client nursing associations, the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA). We are seeking an experienced communications and marketing professional with an understanding and commitment to improving our health care system and supporting care professionals. This is an excellent opportunity for a mission-driven, energetic, professional to share expertise and best practices in branding and messaging, and to strategically develop and manage communications both internally and externally, especially on policy and advocacy initiatives, to advance the goals of the Association.

The position requires a minimum of 37.5 hours per week with some evening and weekend hours, primarily at the AJJ office located in Pitman NJ.


  • Works closely with the team assigned to the client and the Executive Director to create and lead strategic messaging, provide thought leadership support, develop, and execute on prioritized campaigns, market the Association internally and externally, and track and analyze results.
  • Develop and implement an annual communication plan to support the Association’s goals and strategic planning.
  • Develop effective messaging to reach key segments to raise the visibility of the Association, advance important initiatives and build the brand – especially among national media and trade press, ANNA membership and partner organizations, targeted healthcare stakeholders, and elected officials and their staff.
  • Write, edit, and initiate the placement of Op-Eds, Letters to the Editor, articles for publication, strong promotional copy and targeted messaging for ongoing initiatives as well as segments of messaging campaigns. Identify cross-promotional opportunities.
  • Manage analytical data for all messaging vehicles, including web, email, social media, and print—looking for trends and monitoring and adjusting as needed for maximum effectiveness.
  • Manage the website, working closely with designers when needed, and incorporate the use of marketing automation, landing pages and automation functions to deliver targeted messaging, content and offers to members, prospects, partners, and other constituencies.
  • Ensure consistency of messaging and branding across segmented advocacy, programmatic and promotional efforts.


  • Undergraduate degree in public relations, communications, or marketing. Masters preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in strategic messaging, media engagement and marketing required. Issue campaign experience a plus.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of accessing, evaluating, and leveraging marketing and digital performance data to measure marketing, communications, campaigns, advertising, and digital performance.
  • Experience in healthcare association, healthcare policy messaging, and event strategic messaging preferred.
  • Proven creative and analytical skills, as well as experience developing and launching integrated campaigns needed.
  • Excellent writing, presentation and proof-reading skills required; strong oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential.
  • Must be team-oriented, with demonstrated project management, and client/liaison skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision and collaboratively with the larger AJJ, Inc. corporate team within the corporate structure.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects required; experience in web-based marketing required.
